History of Coffee Makers

History of coffee makers is interesting and no coffee maker has evolved in a day. Just like any other coffee makers came into existence only because of necessity of making a more satisfying cup of coffee.

There were three main areas of concern for coffee drinkers in earlier times:

  • Firstly, for the coffee to give out unique and special aroma it was necessary that the coffee should brew long enough to release all its qualities.
  • Second point of concern was that the coffee should not contain grounds while drinking and should be strained;
  • Third reason for inventions was that the coffee should remain warm, because if brewed longer coffee turned colder and brewing for shorter period would not give out the coffee taste.

After trying out several things like tying coffee in a cloth and brewing it or letting hot water pour over the coffee or boiling coffee in a pot, people started using newer techniques. Today’s famous Melitta coffee products are actually named for a German housewife Melitta who used a blotting paper to separate coffee grounds and coffee for the first time.

Another substantial breakthrough regarding coffee machines came in the form of percolators created by a French smith called Laurens. However, today’s machines were nowhere in sight until the year 1820 when world’s first espresso coffee machine was created. It was in 1947 when world’s first espresso machine was designed by Achille Gaggia. This machine was quite similar to today’s espresso machines. This machine also provided the cream or crema on top of the espresso coffee.
