Sure, it’s easy to brew a pot of coffee at home with an electric coffee maker, but there are several ways to make your coffee taste great. Why? When coffee grounds are steeped in hot water, oils from the coffee are released into the water. These oils can build up in the filter, drip spout and carafe, leaving a nasty brown stain. Mineral deposits are the other reason. Minerals in water will leave deposits inside the reservoir and tubing that pumps water to the filter. If the minerals are left for a long time, they may clog the machine’s tubing and the flavor of your coffee will never taste the same again.

To clean the inside of the machine, you’ll need to create a cleaning solution. Take a couple of table spoons of citric acid and dissolve in four cups warm–not hot– water. Then add four cups cold water to the mix. Pour this solution into the reservoir.

Remove the filter basket and turn on the coffee maker. Let the coffee maker go halfway through brew cycle and then shut off the machine for about fifteen minutes. Once the machine has cooled, turn it on and allow the brew cycle to finish. Discard the solution that comes out.

Finally, pour cold water into the reservoir and let the machine run. Let it cool off, pour out the ‘brewed’ water and repeat two or three more times with fresh water. If you make a habit of this, your coffee will taste fresh all the time!
